‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days’ is a controversial work more talked about than seen. Despite being the surprise, underdog winner of the Palme D'Or this year, it was a conspicuously absurd omission from the Best Foreign Language Shortlist for this year’s Oscar nominations (that's right, it didn't even make the 'shortlist'). A bitter condemnation of life in Romania during the totalitarian reign of Nicolae Ceausescu, Christian Mungiu’s sophomore effort is a rattling experience.

It’s 1987 and we’re placed in an unnamed shithole of a city under the blanket of Communist misrule. For 12 hours we observe the actions of a student, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), as she searches for a way to find her pregnant roommate Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) an abortion. With Romanian society in the grip of Ceausescu’s ‘Golden Age’, and abortions illegal, it becomes a Sisyphean task. From black market wheedling, surveillance and suffocating questioning from all facets, Otilia is forced to perform all the necessary tasks of attending to her weak friend. The question of pro-choice or pro-life is mute as the decision has already been made. What we witness is the consequences. The camera follows Otilia through underlit hotel rooms and various decrepit backalleys. Otilia meets a sordid cast of characters from the callow, opportunistic abortionist, to an upper-caste family simmering with tension at the ring of the telephone. It’s all well beyond loyalty to clean up Gabita’s mess.

The director’s presentation of the dilemma is like a rigid Dogma exercise. Mungiu keeps the camera at eye level, uses one shot for each scene, refrains from using music, and exclusively uses natural light (often plunging the audience into total darkness). It builds up to a sequence when the protagonist has to perform one last crucial task, the realism of which is worthy of the quiet terror throughout the entire ‘No Country for Old Men’.

In the role of the ‘hero’, Anamaria Marinca is fantastic – her guarded face projects the quiet pain of being lower-class and powerless in a corrupt Communist state. Though a minor issue is perhaps the extreme ‘Herzogian’ degree of hardship Otilia is forced to endure. With the entire universe conspiring against her, at times it actually strains the film’s credibility.

Some critics have declared a ‘Romanian New Wave’ based on the success thias film and his fellow countrymen Cristi Puiu’s “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” and Corneliu Poromboiu’s “12:08 East of Bucharest”. I’m eager to seek out the results of this burgeoning movement.

A warning for the squeamish, if you are uncomfortable with the subject matter of abortion this is a realistic representation, proceed cautiously. I highly recommend this film.

Red-White Web 2.0 - The buttons are nice. The search bar looks like a candy bar. The color combination is good. A template true to its name.

S08 - A blue color body on a darker blue background - you might have thought it won’t work? But here it is.

Vertical - As a the name suggests, this is a vertically designed clean template. You might want to throw in some more code and utilize the space below the blog title better.

Web 2.0 - A black and white template with a slight touch of blue color on the blog logo and the RSS feed.

3-column templates

Andreas4 - Another popular Wordpress template by Andreas cloned for Blogger. The template can be used as a bare bone structure for customization.

Autumn Grass - I like the color combination and the vertical menu links in the header. There is also sufficient space there for ads and videos.

Beautiful Red Apple - Another nice Wordpress theme converted into a Blogger template, has a 940px width frame, lots of space and customization possibilities.

Columnas - This theme’s peculiar design stands out from the rest of the templates in this list. Nice and clean.

Cultivado - Neat, floral, elegant - this one’s perfect for writing on life, philosophy, thoughts, poetry, love and the like.

Dark Ritual - A nice theme which somehow reminds us of Adams Family.

Erudite - A neat three-column Blogger template with the black color header and the orange color RSS icon gelling well.

Fluid Solution - Another cool black and white look.

Fresh Blogger Template - A fresh looking (it really is) green and blue theme. Great usability.

Garland - Drupal’s default look copied to Blogger. Soothing to the eyes, isn’t it?

Magazine-Style - A nice template if you have a lot of information and widgets to display up front. It has got a three columns in the main area as well as in the footer area.

Pink Flower - A simple and elegant template with an image of, you guessed it, a pink flower.

Pizza - Don’t be dissuaded by the pizza theme if you are thinking of using this for a different subject blog. The template is highly customizable. The unique element in this template is the header which has been divided into two parts. You can display your blog logo or tittle on the left-side header box while using the other box for whatever you like.

Pro - A different-look search box, menu links above the blog title, and the graduated blue header background in a unique design makes this template unique.

Puerto - Somehow this template makes the post body look grand and majestic.

The Hobbit - If you are a fan of Tolkien, this one is for you.

Neo - A 3 column template that reloads in parts allowing faster reading and surfing.

Slined Mod 2.0 - Somehow, this one seems to fit a music/gaming theme best.

Strategies to Expand Your Blog’s Reach in 2008

Create Multiple Channels. Pick several topics you are interested in and set up mini-blogs on subdomains or subfolders on your site. This topical division will allow you to reach out to greater audiences and is especially necessary if you feel that you are outgrowing your blog’s initial focus.
I liked how Boing Boing set up a subdoman for video posts and gadgets. Wired’s blog network and Wendy’s Emoms at Home are good examples of how different niche topics are each given equal emphasis on the same domain. This is an option to consider if you don’t want to set up more blogs.
User Generated Content. Getting others to create content for your site is a good way to expand your blog’s reach. You can open up submissions of articles to the general public and publish the ones you feel most worthy. Alternatively, you can set up an account-based system whereby users will be able to register and publish content which will be moderated by editors.
I like how most of I Can Have Cheezburger’s content is created and rated by users. SEOMoz’s Youmoz is an example of an entire blog powered by user generated content.
Localize Your Blog. One surefire way to reach a larger audience is to target a local market and correspondingly reach out to the local audience in its original language. This means translating your blog and making it geo-specific. Gizmodo is a good example. Check out the little country flags under the logo. Localization allows you to cover topics which major industry blogs will inevitably fail to cover. This allows you to be comprehensive as a brand.
Build a Blog Network. If you already have one or two blogs, create a few more and form a mini blog network. Buy a new domain and set up a corporate HQ for media related and advertising enquiries.
An example of an independent ad network build around a few blogs is Collis Ta’eed’s Miiingle. Sell network ads and use each blog to drive traffic to the other. This is an effective way to improve the readership of all your blogs. Gawker Media is an example of an excellent blog network.
Set up a Forum/Social Network. Increased interactivity is one the main reasons why you should set up a forum for your blog. You want your readers to be one of the reasons why people visit and revisit your site.
By providing a corner for readers to discuss issues, you are automatically creating a magnet (apart from your content) which encourages visitors to return to your website. Mashable is a blog with a social network and TechCrunch has a forum that’s well populated as well.
Establish an Email Newsletter. Newsletters are terrific ways to reach an audience away from your blog and are important when you need to sendout specific narrowcast messages without using your main communication channel (your blog content). Create a weekly or bi-weekly newsletter and connect with your audience.
Newsletters are great for monetization and are an easy way to keep certain readers (those not familiar with RSS) close to your weblog. When combined with landing pages, they work better alongside PPC advertising when it comes to capturing leads.
Clone Your Blog. Have a successful blog and want to try other niches? Clone your blog’s general look/approach/strategy and set it up for another niche. This is an easy and fast way for you to develop multiple blogs which may bring in more income. Blogs can be interlinked in articles or blogrolls to share traffic.
If your blog has been relatively well received in one niche, the same approach may bring you success in another. For instance, Daniel cloned his successful Daily Blog Tips venture into Daily Writing Tips and Daily Bits, both of which are blogs in the same format while covering different niches/topics.
Participate in a Social Community. Niche social communities like forums or social networking/news websites are not only a good way to get targeted traffic but an efficient to brand yourself. Pick a couple of social communities and when you are not blogging, spend time on them to network and establish connections.
Build a reputation for yourself and your blog will grow alongside it. For example, I’ve invested a good amount of time on Sphinn and it has earned me friends, new readers and a great deal of new knowledge on topics related to Dosh Dosh.
Optimize For Social Media. Social Media optimization can work in two ways for your blog. The first way focuses on allowing your readers to communicate and interact with each other and yourself away from your blog through channels like Twitter or Facebook.
Open up accounts in social websites which your audience might frequent and connect them to your blog. The other method involves marketing your blog through social media communities. To do this, pick a community that is relevant to your site, befriend the influencers and disseminate your content.
Bring in New Writers. New writers = new voices and more opportunities for you to do more backend work (marketing/management). I recommend handpicking and hiring quality writers and paying them on a per-post or pageview basis. You want the best people for the job since their content will make or break your blog’s growth.
Sell a Product or Service. Putting ads on your blog is an easy way to make money but you’re leaving money off the table by not having a paid product or service you can promote as an add-on. Think about it. Every new visitor that streams in daily to your site is a potential customer or client.
They aren’t only subscribers or pageviews to be counted. Create a product (ebook, software) or office a service (consultation/design) on top of what your blog. Freelance Switch’s book on freelancing is a good example of how to sell a product alongside your blog.
Create Premium content. Premium content refers to exclusive content not made available to the public. They can be given for free or on a paid subscription basis. Create a members only private blog or subsection on your site and promote paid subscriptions alongside your free content.
Detailed tutorials, tools, free members-only products (ebooks), user generated content and efficient customer support on your end will make premium content attractive. SEOmoz’s premium content section is an good example of something that would work.
Create an Industry Event. Start an annual competition or award ceremony to showcase and celebrate personalities, websites and companies in your respective industry. This is an incredibly powerful way to get not only links but buzz surrounding your site.
Examples of a successful award initiative are Mashable’s Open Web Awards and Crunchies, a collaborative tech awards ceremony set up by Techcrunch and other blogs like GigaOM and Read/Write Web.
Partner with Other Blogs. Working together with other blogs is an incredibly easy way to expand your site’s reach. Work together with a few other bloggers for an initiative such as a social network, collaborative writing project, awards ceremony or application.
Co-brand this product and use to get attention. This builds your blog/personal brand and drives targeted traffic to your site.
Make Your Blog Mobile. Some readers like to access blogs through mobile devices like PDAs or cellphones so making your blog mobile may help you to reach more people. It’s not too far fetched to imagine someone reading your blog article on a PDA and then showing it or sending it to a couple of friends. Here’s an excellent guide on how to make your blog mobile-friendly.
Start Doing Video/Podcasts. Video blogging is an easy way to get some extra traffic, because you’ll allow your blog content to reach a whole new audience. Social video websites like Youtube, Dailymotion and Metacafe are high traffic venues which can bring you not only sales conversions but new readers.
Some marketers/bloggers who have been doing video for a while include Mark Wielgus, Shawn Collins and Darren Rowse. Viral marketing for videos is sometimes easier than written content and this is something you definitely should exploit.

Essential Tips to Writing the Ultimate Tutorial

Why Write a Tutorial?

Creating value-packed content is key in attracting and retaining readership. One of the best ways to create such value-packed content is to write an informative tutorial or guide on a subject that is sorely lacking one. Writing such a tutorial can be a great way to develop your reputation, increase web traffic to your site, build incoming links to your site, and can also make you an authority on the given topic.

Tutorials are a great source of traffic that is maintained over time. Regular blog posts bring in the majority of their visitors during the first couple days of their existence. Afterwards they might as well be deleted from your blog because they will most likely rot in the archives, never to be read again. Tutorials on the other hand, provide consistent traffic that will bring in more traffic over its life time than many of your other posts. It is not a stretch to say that a good tutorial can bring in as much traffic (or more) compared to 20 well written posts.

Take for example, Caroline MiddleBrook’s Twitter Guide or Skelliewag’s Flickr Guide. Both are great examples of a well written tutorial that have greatly enhanced the popularity of the author by providing tremendous value to its readers.

Piecing together the Tutorial

1. Choose a good topic. You should start with topics wherein you have a good amount of knowledge. But if there are already a bunch of tutorials on those topic, it could be difficult to attract any traffic. Thus, its a good idea to do a quick search on Google to gauge the competition. Another good idea is to consider writing tutorials on topics that don’t have any tutorials written on them yet.

Obviously, it helps if there is a need or demand for said tutorial. Usually, if you are the first person to write a comprehensive tutorial on a particular topic, there’s a good chance that your tutorial will attract all the traffic and establish a firm spot atop the search engines . . . that is, until someone writes a superior tutorial on the same topic. The next 10 tips will help prevent this from happening.

2. Clearly state the objective of your tutorial. This should be done in the title description and then once again in more detail at the very beginning of the tutorial. This gives readers an idea of what to expect and helps them determine if they want to continue reading.

3. Be clear and concise. This tip simply cannot be understated. You want to write the tutorial in such a manner that a 3rd grader can understand and follow. Tutorials require a different style of writing than you are probably used too because your main objective is to teach something to the user. It is imperative that your tutorial is clear and concise so that the reader does not get confused or frustrated. Remember, a tutorial is supposed to help a person learn, so you want to make it as easy as possible for them.

4. Use images to supplement the text. A picture can be worth a thousand words. Most of the time, you will need pictures to explain how to do things. Using screen shots and modifying images to describe what you are saying can greatly aid in getting your point across to the reader. Well placed pictures can make or break a good tutorial.

5. Use examples. Find simple examples that will best illustrate your point. Examples are critical to a tutorial because applying information can really help the reader understand and grasp the material better. Talking about doing something, and actually doing it are two completely different things. If possible, multiple examples should be used as it can be quite useful to the reader. If relevant, include source files of examples that you conduct.

6. Use an organized structure. Writing tutorials in list format make them more visually appealing and increase their readability. Some tutorials can get quite large, so developing an organized structure can help your user navigate around the different sections. I use a Table of Contents plugin to help me organize my tutorials. In addition, I also use multiple pages to break up my tutorial into more manageable pieces. Some users prefer that all the content is on one page, so it might be a good idea to offer both formats.

7. Break down the tutorial into simple steps. It’s better to have two simple steps, than one step that is longer and more complicated. Remember, we’re trying to make it easier on the reader, not harder.

8. Leave nothing to ambiguity. This point reinforces #3, but deserves it’s own mention. Explaining more is better than explaining less. More information is better than less information. Once again, it all comes down to making it easy for the reader. Try not to make any assumptions about what the reader does or does not know.

9. Proofread and run through your tutorial. It is also a good idea to have some other people do the same. Odds are good that they will find stuff you forgot to mention. In addition, they can provide feedback on parts where you failed to explain certain things clearly or parts where more information could have been offered.

10. Include a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section. This is a good way to answer questions before they are even asked and acts as a good supplement to the tutorial. As you get more feedback from readers, you can continually update the the FAQ section so that new readers do not ask the same questions.

11. Update and provide support. No matter how comprehensive your tutorial is, it is practically guaranteed that you will forget to address a particular issue or that people will have further questions. You should treat your tutorial as a living document and edit it when new information comes into play. You should also be ready to answer any questions in a timely manner. By showing that you are active and willing to help, you will build credibility by the sheer number of comments and responses. If the comment section gets too crowded, you may even have to consider using a forum.
